Tabouli is an illustrator & muralist based in Montreal. He holds a Masters in Architecture with a background in Mathematics, both of which strongly inspire his artistic narrative.
Drawing with inks, his approach to design and illustration focuses on both traditional perspective drawing & isometric projection, blurring the line between accurate representation and manipulation of depth & altitude.
Often applying architectural concepts to ubiquitous subject matter, he breaks down objects into components and reconfigures them to create abstract, yet familiar, spatial forms. While exploring both the accuracies and idiosyncrasies of isometric projection, he applies meticulous, three-dimensional procedures on overlooked, two-dimensional imagery, yielding results that are complex, evocative and unbound to their original meaning.
Recent work is inspired by traditional perspective techniques, using the fundamental guidelines, not as means of classical representation, but as inspiration for the groundwork of imagined spaces.
Tabouli’s work draws influence from Mattias Adolfsson’s relentless attention to detail, Escher’s unconventional perspectives, Dali’s surrealist landscapes, and the methodical playfulness of neo-futurist architecture group, Archigram. Inspired by structure, order and identifiable imagery; and motivated to celebrate the geometry of the mundane, his output is technically-focused, but cheeky and curious at the same time.
